EditWe create tools for our expert curators to annotate proteins and proteomes. We also develop data science and artificial intelligence based methods for producing high-quality protein annotations.
There are billions of proteins that make up the living world and each one has a role in how cells function. UniProt is a freely-accessible scientific database that contains information about the biological function of millions of proteins. Protein annotation means collecting all the existing information about a given protein and making it easily accessible to researchers all over the world. This enables researchers to answer a range of scientific questions, including how genomic variation affects protein function, and hence phenotype, disease susceptibility and drug responses.
We are globally recognised as the industry leader in bioinformatics infrastructure for protein databases and services. We develop world-leading resources like the UniProt, the Gene Ontology Annotation and the Enzyme portal, which have become an integral part of the tools researchers use daily for their work. Throughout our work, we are driven by our passion to make these tools and resources freely available to all.
Our research interests include:
– the study of novel methods for protein annotation and representation employing machine learning algorithms
– provision of high quality annotation in reference proteomes for the scientific community
– data analysis and visualisation of protein data in the context of proteomics and variation.
We strongly believe that diverse and inclusive teams accelerate innovation. Our international team comprises bioinformaticians, software developers, data scientists, web developers, user experience (UX) researchers, and user interface (UI) designers, all coming together to develop and enhance our renowned resources and infrastructure for protein sequence data and representation.
We are proud to work and collaborate with researchers from all over the world, and welcome project proposals from Masters students, undergraduates and others who share our enthusiasm for bioinformatics.
