ChEBI Name oxymetazoline
ChEBI ID CHEBI:7862
Definition A member of the class of phenols that is 2,4-dimethylphenol which is substituted at positions 3 and 6 by 4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-2-ylmethyl and tert-butyl groups, respectively. A direct-acting sympathomimetic with marked α-adrenergic activity, it is a vasoconstrictor that is used (generally as the hydrochloride salt) to relieve nasal congestion.

Roles Classification
Biological Role(s): alpha-adrenergic agonist
An agent that selectively binds to and activates alpha-adrenergic receptors.
sympathomimetic agent
A drug that mimics the effects of stimulating postganglionic adrenergic sympathetic nerves. Included in this class are drugs that directly stimulate adrenergic receptors and drugs that act indirectly by provoking the release of adrenergic transmitters.
