The taxon Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a complex of several genomic species (called genomovar/genomospecies, numberred G1 to G13). Each genomic species has a specific ecological niche, but the biochemical parameters of these niches remain cryptic. A reverse ecology approach has thus been applied to infer specific ecologies from the genome sequences by identifying synapomorphic gene gains and losses.
