The objective of this study was to study how immigration mediates the relative importance of ecological selection and stochasticity in shaping community assemblies. We investigated these processes using the bacterial communities hosted by monarch butterfly larvae (Danaus plexippus). This allowed us test general ecological theory in a host associated microbial community context.
