The beardfish (Polymixia lowei) is a species of the genus Polymixia, the only extant genus of the order Polymixiiformes and family Polymixiidae. Polymixia contains 10 species, all of which live in deepwater marine environments. They are found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and western Pacific Oceans (from Wikipedia entry). This sample of a male individual was collected by Gregory Watkins-Colwell in the North Atlantic Ocean, and coordinated by Thomas Near to generate a high-quality reference genome for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing and genome assembly were conducted at the Vertebrate Genome Lab (VGL) at the Rockefeller University, led by Erich D. Jarvis, Giulio Formenti, and Jennifer Balacco.
