Oikopleura dioica is a member of the urochordates, small invertebrate marine animals that are also called tunicates. O. dioica is part of the urochordate class of appendicularians; this group differs from ascidians, such as Ciona intestinalis, in that appendicularians retain the notochord throughout the life cycle, making them easier to compare to vertebrates.
