Xanthium strumarium is an annual plant of the Asteraceae family. It is thought to be native to North America but currently is found in many parts of the world. The plant has been used in traditional medicine in South Asia, China and the Zuni Native Americans. Seeds and seedlings can be consumed in small quantities while the mature plant contains at least four toxins. In large quantities the the seeds and seedlings are toxic also.
