Soldier flies (Stratiomyidae) are one of the most morphologically diverse families of Diptera. Larvae of various species can be aquatic or terrestrial and are used broadly as biological indicators of water quality and alternative proteins for feeding animals. Some can be pests of agricultural crops. The Australian fauna is poorly understood. We sequenced the transcriptomes of eleven soldier flies and relatives, primarily Australian, to reconstruct the phylogeny of the family.
