The Brazilian or South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris) ranges over much of South America's tropical forests. Tapirs prefer to live close to water and are capable swimmers. Several species of tapir live in Central and South America while another tapir species, which once ranged over most of Southeast Asia, is now only found in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. These herbivores are distantly related to horses and rhinoceroses.
