The dual-stage pulse-feed anaerobic co-digestion of fat, oil and grease improved the stability of reactors to withstand high OLR of 2.71 kg VS/m3/d and enabled complete long-chain fatty acids utilization. The highest methane yield was achieved under this high OLR indicating that dual-stage pulse-feed operation was significant in maximizing energy recovery. The predominance of acetogenic Syntrophomonas indicated that it played a major role in beta-oxidation, and its syntrophy with mixotrophic methanogens, such as Methanosarcina, facilitated methanation through the complete degradation of fat, oil and grease in the digesters.
