Streptococcus lutetiensis is epidemiologically associated with diarrhea and may constitute a novel diarrheal pathogen. S. lutetiensis has an attributable risk of 1.3% in diarrheal cases. A potential causal mechanism of disease is a secreted enzyme, cyclic beta 1, 2 glucan synthase, that kills colonic epithelial cells in culture.
