Odontesthes bonariensis (pejerrey) is a freshwater Neotropical silverside native to Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. It is used in aquaculture, popular in sport fisheries, and a model for endocrine studies due to its temperature dependent sex-determination. It has been introduced to many freshwater environments around the world (from Europe to Asia, popular in Japan!). This genome is from a female of an inbred colony at the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina, collected by Gustavo M. Somoza, Juan I. Fernandino, Yamila Cardoso, Agustin Boan, coordinated by Guillermo Orti, to generate a high-quality reference for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP). Sequencing and genome assembly were conducted at the Vertebrate Genomes Lab (VGL) at the Rockefeller University, led by Olivier Fedrigo and Erich D. Jarvis.
