Estrogen receptor beta/gamma
InterPro entry
Short name | ER-beta/gamma |
family relationships |
Description
There are three distinct estrogen receptor (ER) subtypes: ER-alpha, ER-beta, and a third type (ER-gamma) identified in teleost fish
[1]. This entry represents the subtypes beta and gamma.
ER-beta binds estrogens and activates expression of reporter genes containing estrogen response element (ERE). ER-beta differs from ER-alpha in its ligand binding affinities to both natural and synthetic estrogens, tissue distributions, and transactivation properties
[2, 3]. The presence of different ER explains the seemingly contradictory actions of estrogens in certain target tissues, and illustrates the complexity of estrogenic action.
