Description

Thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) family, E1 of E. coli PDC-like subfamily, TPP-binding module; composed of proteins similar to the E1 component of the Escherichia coli pyruvate dehydrogenase multienzyme complex (PDC). PDC catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate and the subsequent acetylation of coenzyme A to acetyl-CoA. The E1 component of PDC catalyzes the first step of the multistep process, using TPP and a divalent cation as cofactors. E. coli PDC is a homodimeric enzyme.
