Description

The Florida lancelet, Branchiostoma floridae, is a small marine filter feeder belonging to the subphylum Cephalochordata. As a basal member of the chordate phylum, it is of great interest to researchers investigating chordate evolution and phylogeny. It has several key anatomical features characteristic of the chordates including a dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal slits and a post-anal tail. Assembly v2.0 was released in 2008. It is around 520 Mb in size, contains approximately 21,900 protein-coding genes, and was derived from a single male specimen collected in Tampa Bay, Florida.
