Description

Babesia bovis is a unicellular eukaryote belonging to the Apicomplexa. It is a tick-borne hemoparasite infecting cattle which causes babeosis or tick fever. Babeosis has also been described in humans, following infection by related species within the genus Babesia. B. bovis was the first protozoan reported to be transmitted by arthropods. Its life cycle is complex, involving stages in both vector and mammalian hosts; in this regard, as well as in the symptoms caused, B. bovis shows similarities to other apicomplexan hemoparasites like Theileria parva and Plasmodium falciparum.
