Description
Photorhabdus luminescens is a motile, bioluminescent, enterobacterium which is pathogenic to a wide range of insects but lives in symbiosis with soil entomopathogenic nematodes. The life cycle of the bacterium is composed of a symbiotic stage in the nematode and a virulent stage in the insect larvae. The genome encodes a large number of adhesins, toxins, hemolysins, proteases and lipases, and contains a wide array of antibiotic synthesizing genes (adapted from PMID 14528314).
