Description

The Nile tilapia is a fish belonging to the Cichlidae family. This species can be found in the wild in Egypt, Africa, Israel, Asia, and in various introduced populations around the world, as it is the second most widely cultured food fish. Pictures on the walls of an Egyptian tomb displaying the fish in ornamental ponds suggest that it was domesticated at least 4,000 years ago. As a cichlid fish, it is an important model organism for studying sex-determination evolution, speciation and behavior. The Nile tilapia genome has 22 pairs of chromosomes containing 928 Mb with 30,000 protein-coding genes. The reference proteome is derived from the genome sequence published in 2013.
