Family I71
Summary for family I71
Name | Inhibitor family I71 (falstatin family) |
Family type peptidase | I71.001 - falstatin (Plasmodium falciparum), MEROPS Accession MER0061092 (inhibitor unit: 1-413) |
Content of family | Inhibitor family I71 contains cysteine peptidase inhibitors. |
History |
Identifier created: MEROPS 7.7 (23 January 2007) Pandey et al. (2006) showed that in some developmental stages, the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) expresses an inhibitor of cysteine peptidases, termed falstatin. In its merozoite stage, Plasmodium falciparum invades host erythrocytes and feeds on haemoglobin that it degrades with peptidases including several cysteine peptidase from family C1. Falstatin was not found in trophozoites, the stage at which the cysteine protease activity of P. falciparum is maximal, however. |
Peptidases inhibited | Falstatin inhibits cysteine peptidases predominantly from family C1 but also calpain-1 (C02.001) from family C2 (Pandey et al., 2006). |
Molecular structure | No tertiary structure has been solved, but limited sequence similarity suggests a relationship with members of family I42 (chagasin). |
