Data Use Ontology (DUO) Codes at EGA
All the accessible data in the EGA is associated with DUO codes to define the data use conditions. DUO codes allows EGA to semantically tag datasets with restriction about their usage, making them discoverable automatically based on the authorization level of users, or intended usage. Users are asked to identify DUO codes as part of the submission process which reflects how the data can be used based on participant consent forms.
How DUO codes help?
- DUO Codes immediately allows requesters to identify how the data may be used, and if they would likely get access.
- Mitigates unnecessary applications to Data Access Committees
- Scientists can search on the DUO codes – aiding data discoverability

For example: The DUO code DUO:0000016 implies that use of this dataset is limited to genetic studies only (i.e., no phenotype-only research). In order to search for all datasets tagged with the DUO code DUO:0000016, type this code into the EGA search bar (Figure 6).

More information about DUO codes of interest can be found on the EGA website for Data Use Ontology.
