Who maintains data resources?

The biological data shared through data resources is archived, curated, maintained and updated by expert biocurators.

For data resources that accept submissions directly from researchers, biocurators review the data once it has been submitted, but they are also available to assist researchers with both their data management plans and details of their submission.

In this short video (0:38), Claire O’Donovan, Head of Metabolomics at EMBL-EBI, briefly explains what a biocurator is.

This video clip was taken from the recorded webinar ‘A guide to the maintenance of life science data by biocurators‘.

If you would like to learn more about the role of biocurators, take a look a the website of the International Society for Biocuration.

In the next section, we consider the meaning of ‘open data’ and think about data that has restrictions associated with its use.
