Family I53
Summary for family I53
Name | Inhibitor family I53 (madanin family) |
Family type peptidase | I53.001 - madanin 1 (Haemaphysalis longicornis) (Haemaphysalis longicornis), MEROPS Accession MER0029433 (inhibitor unit: 1-79) |
Content of family | Inhibitor family I53 contains inhibitors of the serine-type endopeptidase thrombin. |
History |
Identifier created: MEROPS 8.2 (4 August 2008) Parasitic arthropods that feed on mammalian blood prevent coagulation to prolong feeding. The tick Haemaphysalis longicornis produces inhibitors in its saliva known as madanins which inhibits thrombin (S01.217) (Iwanaga et al., 2003). |
Peptidases inhibited | Thrombin. |
Mechanism of inhibition | Madanins prevent conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, the activation of coagulation factors V and VIII and aggregation of platelets, but not the amidolytic action of thrombin. Therefore madanins bind to the thrombin exosite 1 and not to its active site (Iwanaga et al., 2003). |
