Content of family	Family S69 contains viral endopeptidases.
History	Identifier created: MEROPS 8.0 (8 January 2008) Tellina virus 1, named after its host the marine bivalve mollusk Tellina tenuis, is a member of a divergent clade of birnaviruses, and its VP4 peptidase differs so much from those of other birnaviruses, in family S50, as to require the separate family S69.

Active site	The catalytic Ser/Lys dyad identified by Nobiron et al. (2008) by mutagenesis does not possess the Gly-X-Ser signature found in family S50 and many other serine peptidases (see the Alignment).
Activities and specificities	Alanyl bonds are cleaved in the processing of a viral polyprotein (Nobiron et al., 2008; see the Substrates page).
Molecular structure	It is reasonable to assume that the fold is similar to those in family S50, and family S69 is also assigned to clan SJ.
